Fate drew us to a tiny ad in The Dominion. Within four weeks we had bought a cafe, sold our home and moved our family to Hawke's Bay in the quest for better weather (sorry Wellington - we love you really) and the perfect cup of coffee!!!

We really had no idea at the time that our lives would be changed forever. Our hobby of drinking coffees in other peoples cafes had quickly become our way of life and coffee has consumed our lives ever since.

The past owners the cafe had started a fledgling coffee roasting business and we saw a real gap in the market, in Hawkes Bay, to roast and serve only organic and ethically traded coffee - coffee that tasted good but also felt fair to make. There was alot of new information at the time of large, international corporations paying peanuts for greenvbeans. Alot of New Zealand coffee companies had one “organic” coffee in their range, or one “fairtrade” blend. But for us there was no other option: Why would you buy the unfair green beans, traded by middlemen who didn't even pay the farmers a sustainable income? Lots of potential customers chose other brands because they were afraid to try “that organic muck”, or they were afraid it would taste different. But we stuck to our guns. We knew paying people fairly was the only way we could be comfortable with also returning a profit on our work in the supply chain.
